A Little Competition Never Hurt...

So... two of our friends challenged us to see who could reach our fitness goals. We weigh-in once a week, did starting measurements, and plan on doing ending measurements. So far, us "wives" both got a bit closer to our goal, but the "husbands" just stayed the same. In order to better motivate ourselves we are encouraging ourselves with prizes and rewards for reaching our goal. I'm more motivated. I've got another 11 weeks or so of this competition and we'll see how it turns out. I'm so excited and pleased with myself!

Yay for a little competition!

Friends

My husband and I have combined with two of our friends to reach our goals and encourage each other. Last night we all weighed ourselves (yup... after Thanksgiving weekend!) and I took everyone's measurements. We are so excited to get working on this and I'm excited to see what really ends up happening. I love that FRIENDS really can help to be so motivating though! Here we go!

Classes are continuing

I know I've been missing for a while from this blog.

Good news...
Classes have been going on whether or not the blogging world knows about it and they have all been successful. I told those who attend that I need at least two people to come each week otherwise I'll cancel it for the week. I've never once had to cancel it. We've had a great variety of people coming and I absolutely love it!

Tonight we are going to mix things up a bit (got moved from Tues to tonight due to church-activity-time-conflicts). We are going to do a class tonight that focuses on the core muscles and hip-region instead of the circuit-training-like stuff we've been doing the last two months or so. Make sure you bring a mat or a towel and all are welcome. The time for tonight is at 5:45pm. See you all there!

Updates & Urging

First:
Go and VOTE today!
This is my "urging" for you...

Second:
Fitness Class. My House. 6-7pm. Tonight.
Be there, or be... round?

Third:
I am back to working out regularly. My goal is simply to do SOMETHING 6 days a week. Even if it is just a 20 minute walk.

Last night I did a Stretch & Tone class at the YMCA and love, love, loved it! I forgot how much I enjoy doing classes and yoga (which was incorporated lots).

Fit and healthy body, here I come!

Time for a new Challenge

It's time for a new challenge! Here it is!
Get at least 8 cups of water daily!

Water is vital to the body functioning properly. Majority of the body is comprised of water. Have you ever heard that drinking lots of water increases your metabolism? In a way, it does.

Your kidneys filter all your blood. This process makes up about 25% of the total calories your body burns at rest. So, if you are drinking more water, your body has more fluid to filter. Therefore it is working harder and using more calories. Exactly how many more calories it burns is uncertain.

In addition, water makes you feel more full.
Water helps your body and cells to work at an optimal level.

Here in AZ we live in a dry, dry desert. I feel it especially during the winter months. (Here's my theory for that- It isn't as hot and therefore doesn't make me feel like drinking as much.) Nevertheless, it is still important.

So, let's get hydrated friends!
Go have a DRINK....
of water!

Class Tomorrow

Class tomorrow will be at the same time and place as usual...

Bring your motivation, any friends, and I'll see you there!

No Class Tonight

I know we've had a Fitness group the last two weeks, but tonight is going to be canceled.
It is Enrichment night for the women of my ward (church). Since most of the attendees are in my ward, I'm encouraging you all to attend Enrichment instead.

We'll pick up next week though.

I'm looking into doing this inside a building. Working on it... I'll let you know when it's finalized.

For now,
Next Tuesday
6pm
My place.
Be there or be...round?

All are welcome.
I know there were some concerns that the class was already full, but there is always room for more friends! Join us whenever you feel like it!

Do it where you are!

This past weekend my hubby & I went out of town to NM.
We were able to take advantage of the beautiful weather and amazing trails that lead throughout the city.
We went running two of the 3 mornings that we were there. {The 3rd day was Sunday & my rest day.)
I didn't specifically watch my calories, but I didn't binge one bit either. I felt so on top of it all weekend. {Minus the massive amounts of green chili we consumed that seemed to burn a hole through our stomachs!}
I felt fit, healthy, and happy. I did come home 2 lbs heavier, but I'm attributing that to the sedentary-ness of the drive home. {Now that I think about it I ate a lot Sunday night too when we got home; no specific reason why other than I just felt hungry, hungry, hungry.}
So, back on track and back to it! Thanks Leah for re-awakening the spirit w/in me!

Still Trying!!!

I am still trying to live a healthier lifestyle. I actually have lost about 4 lbs since my last post but I think that has more to do with PMS making me have an upset stomach so I don't eat much, rather than any real effort I am making but...

I AM GOING TO SEIZE THE MOMENTUM...
keep moving forward

There is no reason (excuses) for me to not be my goal weight in the not to distant future.

It is my choice.
I can choose healthier.
I can choose to take care of myself.

I am at a point in my life where the many barriers that prevented me from moving forward before have now been removed.

*I have no more pregnancy weight to gain then try to lose (5 kids is my personal magic number).

*I've had a procedure (Uterine ablation) done this year that allows me to not be so anemic (low Iron) something that, I see now in hindsight, really affected me. Anemia makes you so tired, well my body needed more energy which translated into more FOOD.

*I am trying see how other areas affect my health (see my 'Heroes makes me fat' blog).

*I also see now that I need to be trying to make choices that will support a better life. Stress really doesn't serve any purpose.
You can be aware of a stressful situation without being stressed!

That is what I am trying to work on.
NO STRESS!!
*BEING* stressed won't somehow change the circumstances, in fact, it seems to me that being stressed often hinders my ability to think rationally to work out difficult situations, aside from making me want chocolate and high sugar foods which just leads to more frustration (fatness, not feeling well, and a shortness of cash!). So I am trying to make choices that will allow me to avoid stressful situations, trying to be fully aware of ALL the consequences from the choices I make, not just for my health, but also for my ability to be a good wife and mother. That's the goal at least!!!
I see what I need to do now.
That's got to be the first step right?!

Thank you Karisa for starting this blog that makes me think about what I want for my life and for my family. I can do it!!

Slackin'

I know... I've been slacking when it comes to blogging on here! I renewed my ambition this weekend and am ready to go once more!
What have you been doing to help yourself get healthier?

Don't Forget!

There is another
FITNESS GROUP
tonight from 6-7pm @ my house.

You don't have to bring anything. Feel free to bring water if you want (I can provide some tap water... ha ha) and a yoga mat if you want that instead of a towel.

Everyone is welcome, male and female, old and young.
You push yourself at your own level and pace.
Come have fun socializing with others while getting fit!

See you there!

Our First Fitness Group...

...was a total success!

Thanks to those who came!
I got a lot of good feedback from nearly all of you! I hope that you enjoyed working out with other friends and that you feel the slight burn tomorrow! {Please let me know and others know by commenting if you came!} You all pushed yourselves hard and that's what I wanted. That's what makes me smile. Next week feel free to bring a friend if you want so we can completely fill up. We had about half a dozen tonight and I know more are coming next week for sure! None of you'd better flake on me... speaking of...

MEESA!!
I'm calling you out! Where were you!? I'd better see you next Tuesday!
PS- Tiera says that she misses your guts too!

So, for all those who are interested you are more than welcome to come join. Just shoot me a comment, text message, e-mail {tomkinsontraining@gmail.com}, or phone call so I can get a head count. I would love to see you all and I'm not kidding either! This is just a fun, free way to get together and work out.

See you all in one week!

Update!

This past Saturday my husband and I went trail running.
We got a late start (10:30am) and got worn out quickly from the heat. I'm glad I have a husband to run with though, because he keeps me going and vice-versa {I don't think I really pushed him too much though}. We finished our run about 11:40am.
It was one fun, but difficult run. Next time we go, we definitely need to go out earlier. The whole heat thing just sucked the energy out of me. I'm guessing we did about 3.5-4 miles total. (I walked some, we did lots of small hills and one really big one, and stopped to get stuff out of shoes once or twice.) I think my husband called the trail "Bobcat" trail although I never saw a sign that said "Bobcat" trail anywhere. That's another reason I am glad he came... navigation.

***************

I'm going to be doing a training class on Tuesday nights at my house/yard (initially). Tomorrow's will begin at 6pm and end at 7pm promptly. If you want to come and do a weekly weigh-in, arrive a few minutes early so we can get started on-time and make the most of our full hour. I plan on working ya good! Text, e-mail, or message me if you want to come and/or need directions. This is a free class for the time being as well! :) Just come ready to push yourself and do your personal best.

****************

Thanks for the encouragement I get from everyone and for checking up on me. I do enjoy the verbal affirmations I hear, even though the rest of the blogging world doesn't hear it. Thank you family, friends, and visitors for keeping me heading in the right direction.

Personal Weigh-In: 133.6lbs.
(Not much change so far... pretty consistent still. I need to get a move on with it!)

Back to it

I finally got to go running again last night. I haven't ran for-ev-ver!
I ran with two good friends in my ward. I loved it.

It was the first time I didn't run with an MP3 player, timer, heart rate monitor, or my do-dah that tells me how far I go and my pace. {Yeah, I usually run with all of those!}
No machines, just my body moving.

I just kept running and ended up going a little over 5 miles! (One of my running partners figured that out.) For the first time out running in several weeks, that's not bad at all.

It just felt good to run uninhibited and just listen to my body; my body and the sounds around me. My mind was able to get lost in thoughts. It may have just been because I haven't done it in so long, but running is definitely something I can't live without for too long.

No sore knees today either. I think I'm just going to get my shoe inserts re-done. {8 years are a bit long to go on the same foot-molded inserts.} I've got one sore toe-nail, that's it.

I'm back to it and have never felt better.

Heroes makes me fat

You heard me. Heroes (awesome NBC show on Monday nights) totally makes me fat.

I know you are skeptical but it is true!

I think I have finally made a break thru on my fatness.
(I italicized it to make it look pretty -that is how I deal with being 30 lbs over weight!)

It is time to connect the dots.

Why am I so lame at watching my calories? I do great all day then about 3pm, I just lose it. I totally eat whatever I can get my hands on and I don't even feel that hungry!?! I think I might have figured it out.
I was really awful on Tuesday. So I decided to stop and think about it. I was totally exhausted on Tuesday because I had stayed up late to watch one of my favorite shows Premire night episodes. (It was so good. I love Heroes!) So when I woke up the next morning at 2am (yes you read that correctly) I had a really hard time. Well next thing I know I am eating my way thru the day. (I did eat salad instead of cereal one time in effort to do better but by evening I wasn't even trying anymore).

My body needed the energy

because I had not taken care of it. By staying up late I had not given my body the chance to recharge so it required more fuel. (read: chocolate)

I KNOW that watching calories is 80% of weight loss. I need to have more will power
OR maybe it is time to think outside of the box.
To not just feel discouraged and disappointed with myself.
But actually DO something about it. Make some changes.

Connect the dots

Staying up late makes you fat!!

Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healty and wealthy and wise.
(read: DUH!!!) Obviously I have heard this before but never really internalized it (or just needed to be reminded.)

*Only getting 4 hours of sleep means
*YOU ARE GOING TO BE SLEEPY!
*Which means your body will tell you EAT
*which means the three pounds you lost last week from working your booty off in aerobics was all in VAIN!

Those are the dots they are connected.

I am so glad for DVR. My new weightloss weapon!

Day 12, 13, & 14

Day 12- Legs & Back and Ab Ripper X
Day 13- Didn't do... I know I'm a slacker.
Day 14- Rest/Stretch Day

Legs & Back was done in the evening and I didn't use any weights because I was in a hurry to get it done, sad as that sounds. Also I'm going to be making a few changes to benefit me more.

I had to take an extra day off because I'm getting a bit too overwhelmed between Graduate school and forcing myself to do an hour+ of working out everyday. I may back down a bit with P90X and do it only every other day and incorporate more of the YMCA, running, etc. into my workouts to relieve more stress for me. (I need to start running somehow again... it's my release.)

In addition to that, I really want to do my training again with a few of my friends. We are going to be doing a workout/circuit group on Tuesday Nights. I'm excited for this. I can only do so much working out in one day and shouldn't dread it. If it is bringing me more stress than joy, I need to step back. I still plan on working out intensely daily, but I just want to do what I WANT TO DO each day. Is that bad?

I also want to begin just eating "clean". My sister in law is great with this, but I have a much harder time at it. No preservatives, food colorings, additives, etc. to foods. I eat like this most of the time anyway, but I need to do it regularly.

I'm continuously improving and working to be better each day! I can do this!

Oh- and I forgot to weigh in this morning... I'm ok with that though. Ha ha!

The Official Day 1

Hello all, I didn't realize how nerve racking this really is. Ok I have a short term goal...its to fit into my older sister's wedding dress. Not a good picture of it I know, but you get the point. My husband and I will be taking wedding pics so I don't really want to look at those a couple years from now and be like "YIKES!" My eventual goal is just to change my eating habits and daily habits. A couple months ago, my mom was diagnosed with diabetes, which put me in a scare but even worse that it comes from both sides of my family. So, I really want to avoid all of that. I just don't want to living my entire life regretting that "if I would have just exercised when I was younger." So my plan is to eat healthy, be active, and motivate those around me!

Expanding the Blog

I decided to add some new authors to help them with motivation and accountability.
They'll be introducing themselves soon I'm sure!

If you want to be added as an author..
(Leah? Mom? Kathe? Holly?... anyone else?)
just let me know
{via e-mail: TomkinsonTraining@gmail.com
or commenting}
and I'll add you.

Remember to keep the posts on here fitness, exercise, nutrition, progress, etc. related.
It's not a personal/family blog {although I'll add links for those if you want too}, but a blog to keep us focused and motivated!

ALSO...
make the label for your posts your name/nickname {the same for every one} so that all your posts can be reached by one click on the link.

Here we go team!

Day 11

Today is Day 11!

Yoga X baby!

I did it at my parent's house {since I hang out there till Ty is done w/ his classes} and had a lot of fun doing it. My mom and two youngest brothers joined me throughout the exercises. I will say that I noticed an improvement in nearly all the exercises compared to last week. I was able to do quite a few push-ups and did really well on the Yoga Abs Seven {or whatever they are called}.
I forgot to bring my heart rate monitor, so I don't know how many calories I burned doing this exercise, but I'll bet it was at least the same as last week.

Calories Consumed:<<<>>>
{PS- I've been so hungry the last few days. I'm sure it's due to the spike in calorie expenditure women get right before their cycle.... if that's TMI, I'm sorry.}

I'm so surprised with how fast this is going by already! I'm ready for the weekend baby!
Legs & Back tomorrow w/ Ab Ripper X!

Bring it!

11 days down,
79 more to go!

::Teams::

I've already designed some teams. If you want to join any team to get some online motivation from friends or family, let me know!

Day 9 & 10

So, I'm back to working out in the morning!

I accidentally switched the workouts for day 9 & day 10. Oops.
I did them both nonetheless.

Yesterday I did Shoulders & Arms and Ab Ribber X.

I used the 5lb weights for nearly every exercise. I think I'm going to need to go and buy some 8lb weights. I might have some other weights lying around the house... I'd better look. I really like the Shoulders & Arms workout. It goes by so fast.
Ab Ripper X always is a kill. I took one short break during the "frog" ones. (I don't remember what their called, but for some reason "frog" stand out... they are the 3rd one in after In&Outs and Bicycles.) I feel such a good workout doing this especially after the Core Synergistics. I love the tightness I feel in my abs and core afterwards.

Calories burned: 699 total - 76 min
Calories consumed: 1543

This morning I did Cardio X.

I love this workout because it goes by so fast. I was able to do all the push-ups in the beginning warm-up yoga part except maybe one that I forgot to do. I feel so much more energized in the morning. In the evenings I'm thinking about other things I need to get done before I can go to bed, etc. I need to keep up this morning routine. I went hardcore the whole time.
I'd have to say my favorite exercise of this morning (as last week) were the wacky jacks! Love, love, love how much those get your heart rate up and make you work. I am getting better at the whole Superman/Banana deal, but I want to be able to do it the "right" way when it comes to the banana.... uuhhg. I'll get it soon!

Calories Burned: 485 calories - 44 min
Calories Consumed: 1580

Well... that's the end of Day 10. I'm back on track with my morning workouts. Tomorrow is Yoga X. I'll need to make sure I get up early enough to get the full 90 minutes in. It's long, but I want to have a purpose (i.e., relaxation, re-engergize, etc) when I go into it so that I get more out of it. I'd do that when I had my yoga class during my undergrad and it made every session meaningful.

10 Days Down,
80 More to go!!!

Tuesday, September 16, 2008

Day 8

So, I did my Core Synergistics last night... believe it or not!

I was over at my friend's/nest door neighbor's house till about 10:15pm, but I came home and rushed to get my workout done.

It was so much easier than last week. I used 3 lb weights, because I didn't use any last week and wanted to just increase it a bit. (Even though I didn't get a lot of sleep last time, I still didn't want to over-do it.) I also did nearly all the push-ups! I was so stoked. I pushed myself hard! Even though some of the push-ups were modified, I still did them! My goal is to be able to do that whole workout just doing regular "MAN" push-ups. Also, I need to work on my banana/superman transitions. My banana starts to look more like a boat towards the end of the minute. I'll get it! It just takes time and baby steps to get better!

I was tempted to just go to bed last night instead of do my workout, but I know that I wouldn't be able to do it again for another week. I also know that there are those of you who are watching to see if I keep my promise to myself! (Whether or not you ever comment... I know you're there! Muah-ha-ha-ha!.... just kidding)

So, in addition to that, I also didn't watch what I ate yesterday. We did have homemade pizza for dinner {mmmmm} and I had some chocolate too. I needed an un-structured day after the stress from studying and my exam yesterday. (The grade for my exam still isn't posted, so I'm anxiously waiting!!!)

I did monitor the calories burned though.
>>628 calories<< in 57 minutes

(Oh, and I edited yesterday's post to include the calories burned for the workouts.)

I'm back to watching all my calories strictly today. I didn't get up and do my workout this morning due to my late night fitness excursion yesterday. I'll do it as soon as I get home in order to allow myself some time between tonight's workout and tomorrow mornings. I do plan on getting back on schedule with my morning routine. That was so nice last week!

8 days down....
82 to go!

Monday, September 15, 2008

I'm still HERE!!!

Yes, I'm still here. I've been having a hard time with the stress of school lately. {See: HERE}

I HAVE completed the full first week of P90X!
I'll do more of a write-up about it later though.

I weighed-in this morning.

Current weight: 132.4lbs.

Not much of a great weight loss, but it's something.
Also, I did a lot of stress eating yesterday and some on Saturday. {Not binging, but a lot of munching...} That probably influenced it.

I have my measurements from last week too. I wrote them up on my bathroom mirror with a white-board marker and that is where they have remained since. I'll transfer the information into a blog as soon as I get the chance.

I'm excited for the improvements I'm seeing though. I was sore all day yesterday and stretched out some this morning. {I haven't done my workout yet due to studying till 2am last night.}

I did Legs & Back and Ab Ripper X on Friday.
Cals Consumed: 1211 cals
Cals Burned: Don't remember exactly... somewhere in the 800's though.

I did Kenpo on Saturday.
Cals Consumed: 1687 cals
Cals Burned: 702 cals

Sunday was my Rest/Stretch day.

I feel so happy that I've completed a week thus far. I know that there are more people who check this blog out that just those who've commented... I've had some people e-mail me, talk to me face-to-face about it, etc. Let me know what you're doing though. It doesn't have to be what I'm doing, I just want to know that this is encouraging others to get moving.

Okay,... back to school now.
I'll post later tonight after my work-out.

Getting Started!

There are already a handful of people who have shown interest in getting a healthy lifestyle started! I'm so excited!

Feel free to join us at any time. There is no excuse why you should have to wait till tomorrow topostpone what you really want. It just takes some extra work and motivation!

Here are some things to send me {or comment} if you want to get started:
1. Send me your name/nickname/whatever you want to be called by me {& if you choose, your team/partner}.
2. Your goal (a weight goal, exercising daily, losing wt for pregnancy, getting healthy, whatever)
3. And if you want to be joined up with a team/partner.

I ask you to send me your goal so that I can help pair you with an individual with a similar goal. If you want to send me more about yourself {like age, current wt, ht, etc} feel free. It will help me to guide you in your goals, etc.

I can help you figure out appropriate goals for yourself too if you are confused with what you want or should be aiming for. Just e-mail me @ TomkinsonTraining@gmail.com.

Since there are already people who are wanting to get started...

Here's the first CHALLENGE!
Make a list of the reasons why you want to get healthy.

Write down every reason you can come up with as silly or serious as it may be.
Post this list on your fridge or somewhere you see everyday.
Add to it throughout the week as you think of more reasons.
This is your motivation.
This is why you are really getting fit.
Every reason.

Here we go!

(I'll post my own list tomorrow if you need help getting ideas.)

Day 3 (posted about a day late) & Day 4

Yesterday I did Shoulders & Arms and Ab Ripper X.
I got up in the am to do it... yes I did.
I used mostly 3 & 5 lb weights, because I want to be able to use my arms for the next week and didn't remember what to expect.
Not so bad.
The hard part was the Ab Ripper X.
I don't think I'd fully recovered from Core Synergystics on Monday {which my abs are still sore from}, so it was a challenge to say the least.
I did it though and that's what matters. It will get easier with time I know.
Plus, I love the feeling of being "sore" and unable to move for some reason.

Calories Burned: 639
Calories Consumed: 1381 {I ended the night with two small servings of dessert after mutual: ice cream over a cookie... mmmm!}

This morning a friend of mine came over and did Yoga X with me.
All 90 minutes of it! It was honestly pretty intense!
Even though it was yoga and lots of stretching was involved, it was an intense strength training regime as well.
It did feel good to stretch and do yoga once again though.
Plus, I had a friend there to laugh and enjoy it with. That's always nice.
I'm so stoked that I've been able to do this every morning.
Calories Burned: 575
Calories Consumed:>>>

4 Days Down,
86 More to Go!

4 reasons why I'm loving P90X:
1. I am finally getting on a good sleep schedule.
{Bed by 9:30-10:30pm & up between 5:30-6am)
2. I am already seeing results (or at least feeling them)
3. I feel better about myself when I exercise.
4. P90X has the intensity that I need!

Day 2

I am so excited for the response I've already received from fellow bloggers.
Keep 'em coming!

As for my progress...
I got up again this morning and tackled the task once more of completing my P90X workout.
{Woo-hoo 2 days in a row!}
Let me just preface by saying that I was able to get a good night of sleep and I'm glad I did it in the morning.
I definitely feel sore from yesterday's Core Synergystics workout and get progressively more sore as the day continues. That definitely took a lot out of me yesterday and I feel it everytime I laugh, cough, or move in certain directions already.
{As a side-note it also hurts to sit as I learned when using the restroom.}

Today's workout was Cardio X and I loved it! I was able to go the whole time full and strong. I still have to work on implementing more push-ups into the routine, but I felt so much more energized than I did yesterday. {I'm sure a lot of that has to do with the amount of sleep I received.}

Calories consumed: 1271 (My goal is between 1200-1550kcals for my wt loss)
Calories burned: 527

I still haven't taken any "pre" photos so, they may be skewed as I plan on taking them tonight with the measurements. {I've just been too busy the last few days!} I don't know if I'm going to post my "pre" pictures, but I may take some additional ones that I do feel comfortable posting. Look for my measurements though.

Day 1

Today was Day #1 of my P90X Self-Challenge.
I got up at 5:30am after a horrible nights sleep {4 horrible hours} because I promised myself today I was going to start.

I did Core Synergystics.
{I'm doing the lean routine or whatever it's called}
I thought I was going to die! {or vomit, pass out, etc}
I thought I was in shape until today.

I'll post my exact measurements later.
Currently: 5 foot 5.5 inches and weight 134-ish lbs.

Calories Consumed: 1144 (Low I know, but I went to bed fairly early and was super busy all day)
Calories Burned: 592

I am doing this to tone, get healthy, and feel healthy.
If I lose weight and jiggle along the way... well, that's part of my goal too.

One day down....
only 89 more to go!

I ask you to do the same.
{e-mail me the text for a post and I'll post it}

If you want to be accountable to someone, but don't want to have it posted publicly you can e-mail me at tomkinsontraining{at}gmail{dot}com. I'll buddy you up with a friend who feels the same w/ similar goals or we can work something else out. I want to build a great support group. We spend all this time online & blogging, what's an extra e-mail to check on a friend or say what you've done going to cost anyway?

Send pics if you want me to post them w/ your greatest form of motivation to get fit.

I want to post a daily or weekly challenge once we get a group together too. This challenge may be physical, dietary, or personal/spiritual. This is to help us grow as individuals as much as we can.

Let's get started!

PS- This is free....
I thought I'd mention that for all those who are skeptical and cheap like me.
